Boeing has stated they will build a 777X Freighter - we have history of being a launch customer (757PF, 767PF). Who knows?
|
Boeing has yet to announce a 777X freighter variant. They are still approximately 5 years from delivering the 777X passenger version. Based on the volume required to keep production open on the 777 over that 5 year time-line, they are currently 200 orders short.
Recent history suggests that UPS has been offered competitive prices on new freighters to bridge a gap in production, the 27 767 orders (until KC-46) and now the 747-8F orders (Air Force One). With the reduction in production and paucity of 777 orders, it isn't a huge leap to assume UPS may soon announce a 777 order. The 747-8 was announced within in a year of entry into service. This was only possible because of the common type and the infrastructure in place to train and crew the aircraft. The 777 will have to be announced with an approximate timeline of 2 years before entry into service to allow for the training and development of the infrastructure to support it. All this along with a very specific tell that appeared several weeks ago indicates a 777 order relatively soon is more likely than not. All subject to change of course. |

If you check into it a bit you'll see that we were just approved for 'single qualification' training. That means no more specific theater training required for South America. Sort of opens the door. I was told that we would make a purchase of the JAL airframes on 4/24 with the earrings announcement on 4/28 so it came out a little early. Also heard a few weeks ago that 20 with only 3 picked out so far and an issue with conversion slots so that was pretty accurate. Call them growth airframes or not, that's just semantics but ask yourself if all have to hire more pilots to fly them. I think that the answer is yes. Something else is coming down the line. Stay tuned. |
You're correct, that haven't officially launched the 777X freighter and your analysis for helping to bridge the gap to it would allow UPS to get 777s for a good price...we shall see.
