From the UPS post on FAPA, "Also hiring into Flight Qualified Supervisor (Captain) positions.". I'm trying to find a way to turn down an offer to appy for this without hurting my chance at a line pilot (IPA) job. I would welcome any advice on this.
They hit me with it twice- once at the interview and once at the job fair (I visited them at little OBAP while I was in the pool). I had been in 135/91 management for 11 years prior to UPS, so I told them I would rather go back to being a line pilot for awhile and I would consider any other opportunities in the future. Also, I told them I would rather learn the UPS system as a line guy and make that transition later if it was something I wanted to pursue.

It's nothing I ever considered, but it kept them happy, it was a PC response and I was still hired as an IPAer.

Thanks CL, I was thinking along those lines. It's great to know someone turned them down and was still hired.

I was applying for the line pilot position and not the FQS, so they focused on that. They ask a lot of people with management experience to jump the fence to their side, I think they're used to being told no. Fortunately it's not held against you (at least from the people I've talked to).

There's no reason for you, or anyone else, to fear this question. Every single person in my class (~a decade ago) was asked this very question. It's all about timing. Right now, just like back then, they are looking for instructors because they're very far behind in training on pretty much all fleets. So if you're breathing and ideally have done any training in the past you're a candidate for their "advancement opportunity."

Our answers ranged from "I'd like to learn the ropes before I commit to the training department" to "my wife would kill me if I did anything else but flew the airplanes and came home to take care of the kids"..

They prefer honesty. Be polite, don't put down the position but be firm. They respect it and your chances of getting hired won't change an iota if you say you'd prefer to be a line pilot.

All those stories you hear about people not having a choice are bogus. "I was offered a job but they said they only had an opening in management, so I took it" lol yeah, ok.
Maybe some 20-30 years ago.. For a very long time now they've had separate application systems for the two positions and when they interview line pilot applicants they're very clear with explaining that a management job is a very different position BUT that it allows you to skip the right seat. (well, not always... )

So don't worry about it. "I understand managers do lots of training, line checks, etc.? I love to fly and want to fly hard lines as soon as I can hold them."
Two birds with one stone. You just said no to management AND you said you'll fly a lot! They LOVE that!

Good points to consider for anyone considering John's free prep service...

2. You can bring logbooks and/or copies but don't expect anyone to look at them, it's not something we recommend but if it'll make you feel better to bring them, please do. The writer of this post has produced about 30 Pilot Job Fairs and has never seen a major airline review logbooks at an event.
3. If you have a cover letter, bring it. Again, it doesn't hurt. You can ask the representative if they'd like to see it. It's 50/50 if they do or not.
4. We highly recommend you check out our Resume and Cover Letter Tips and Samples. As a FAPA Pilot Job Fair registrant, you're also a Basic member and are entitled to one complementary annual resume review. You can submit that request on the above page.
5. If you have LORs, you can bring copies of them as well. Be prepared to talk about your relationship with the author of each.
6. The advice for copies of documents is the same as the logbooks, if it'll make you feel better please do bring them but don't expect anyone to look at them.

The general guidance is that the only things that are expected of you at a FAPA Pilot Job Fair is to show up looking professional in business casual attire, have a sufficient number of resumes, and is ready to have a conversation about why you are interested in your target carrier and what you know about that carrier. You should also be able to speak intelligently about what you have put on your own resume.

7. FAPA offers fantastic Interview Prep and have been prepping UPS pilot applicants since 2003 and has a 95% success rate with their applicants. As a FAPA Basic member you qualify for a discount on FAPA Premier Membership which includes the full Interview Prep package. As a bonus, FAPA Premier Members also get access to the express line at FAPA Pilot Job Fairs getting you in and out of the event in a fraction of the time, almost all Premier Members who attend can commute in and out the same day.

While a Pilot Job Fair is not an interview we recommend people prepare for them similar to an interview. The same skillset applies to either environment. FAPA Interview Prep isn't timed or capped so once you're a member, we continue to prep you for multiple Job Fairs, interviews, airlines, etc, all at no extra cost. Essentially, there is no such thing as signing up "too early" for FAPA Interview Prep.

Still think it's silly to signup for Interview Prep before you actually have an interview? When you're enroute to your destination and you know 3 hours prior to arrival that the field's weather is at CATII/III minimums, do you start reviewing/briefing that approach at TOD or ASAP? Same thing for an interview. It's not a matter of if you'll get the interview, it's when. We really can't count how many times people get an interview date and are then rushing to prepare because they wanted to wait. About 80% of the work can be done before you even get the call. All of our preps are done one-on-one, no groups, you get all of the attention.

Lastly (and most importantly), regarding interview prep you should strongly consider the qualifications of the individual you have invested $8.4 million (value of a 30 year career at UPS Airlines, excluding retirement) in. What is this person's background? Why are they uniquely qualified to sharpen your skills as a job applicant? FAPA Interview Coaches all have part 121 pilot hiring backgrounds. 8. Yes, read the "UPS books".

Hopefully this helps. Any more questions or need further clarification you can reach out to us at 1-800-Jet-Jobs or [email protected]

Thank You! looking forward to this experience.
