SDF based. Year 1: I had a commercial flight home Christmas morning and had 2 days off after. Year 2: I traded and dropped stuff and had a bunch of days off over Christmas. I recall almost my entire newhire class had at least parts of Xmas off year 1. I couldn't hold any good international trips that flew over Xmas either year. I know some guys will work FMLA to be off over the holidays.
$100 says you'll forget Christmas 2017 by the following spring. You'll feel your seniority number for the rest of your life.

Why not apply but explain (assuming you're called for an interview sometime before September) that your availability date isn't until January of 2018?
I know of a few military pilots that had to do just that because their separation/retirement won't allow them to start classes before November.
Just a thought.
On a personal note, I'd apply now and get your name in the hat. There are several thousand applications, so it's a bit presumptuous to think that you're getting an interview the minute you apply. And you still have to get through the Hogan before anything.

[QUOTE=IFlyThings;2390581]Hello, folks. New guy on the forums, hoping to end up at Brown sooner rather than later.
When I first read this post I thought that his plan was a way to get to Brown (Or insert next airline here) "never" rather than "sooner".
But after thinking about it, the divorce rate among IPA members is not a small number. If having Christmas morning with your spouse and kids on December 23rd or December 28th would be a problem maybe staying with your current employer and seniority would be the best option.
Have you talked to your spouse about your plans? If you two are comfortable and happy with the situation more power to you. Not being able to bring yourself to apply because the prospect of declining or delaying is too much a burden on you sounds strange to me. Are you afraid the HR sup will be mad at you?
Are you and your spouse planning a spring break trip with your kids? Then summer vacation starts. Don't want to be "busy" then. And then comes trick-or-treat and turkey and Santa again.
If you want to put yourself in a position to have X-mas off 5 years from now, apply and get hired and take first available. If your plans are too important to change then wait. When is the perfect time to change jobs? Is it busy for Delta pilots in the Summertime? Better time your application properly.
If your kids like Santa then a December 22nd Christmas will not be any problem. And if your kids don't like Santa anymore will it harm them for life if they unwrap their IPhone 8 three days early?
What happened to "Hang Loose, Travel Light, and Take No Prisoners"? The pilot in the October 11th 2017 class that gets "your" slot thinks you are making an excellent life-choice.

Oct 11 2017 is a Wednesday and is a doubtful (but not impossible) start date for a UPS class. Minus that potential minor post oversight I couldn't agree more... if a new guy at UPS is allowed to speak on the topic: looking from the outside, it can be difficult to understand how good it might be on the inside. Life here doesn't compare to most places guys come from, we can compare apples to apples all day with DAL, UAL, AAL, and FEX and maybe if you are senior at a few others. If you were to even hint in an interview that you weren't available until January because of other priorities (at any airline) I would venture to guess that you probably don't improve your hiring chances.
I'm no expert but I definitely had a "Hang loose, travel light, and take no prisoners" attitude and would suggest the same for those planning on moving on. For every one not willing to make the sacrifice there are at least a hundred in line. I recommend Christmas on the 26th (I pray mine is that close) this year... each of you can make your own decisions.
Hanging loose, traveling light, and taking no prisoners... best of luck.

I've been home 95% of the major holidays (Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years) since 2004. If you live in SDF and bid Reserve it's a good chance to be home since, domestically, we don't operate on holidays.
Anyway, not to sound like a wise guy, but if you're asking this question Ups is not the place for you.
