UPS 747-8, Seattle as a DEST ALT for ANC?
UPS purchased multiple 747-8's. Takes delivery of these amazing aircraft in the fall and inserts them into the UPS system in the fall, which is the time of year when Alaska has the least desirable aviation weather.
Unfortunately, to date, UPS has only three airports in AK approved for this type of aircraft.
PANC
PAED
PAFA.
So when the dispatcher lists BFI or SEA an an alternate for ANC for the 747-8 and 50,000 lbs of I-phones are left behind in China, that's why.
Unfortunately, to date, UPS has only three airports in AK approved for this type of aircraft.

I take it you work for UPS and were involved in the decision to have limited alternate airports in AK for the -8?

Because those pesky Part 121 regs require us to have a legal destination alternate. The weather in PAFA and PAED doesn't always stay above alternate minimums.

It does seem that someone has actual landing minimums, confused with alternate minimums.

Nope, just never needed two destination alternates for dispatch in 12 years operating in and out of ANC. Maybe more airports you’ll likely never ever see will appear in your ops specs for the paperwork exercise (if that’s even necessary) soon that are -8 approved like PAKN, PACD and PAEI. This is all new right? Don’t these growing pain things take time to sort out? Then that other dude can find something else to whine about over those new aircraft Wish I only had those worries, lol. I imagine you’ll see other alternate airports show up on your release quick if you start bumping freight for SEA fuel.
