Interesting reading some of the comments over the last 2 years, and while this is “not” unique to UPS, but rather our industry in general; it is a shame that anytime one switches jobs it is somehow commonplace to work for almost free or sub-standard wages for the entire year.
How many other professionals when they move jobs laterally start over as an apprentice? While I suppose I agree one should be able to survive, it is a hardship with kids in university etc, to make less money than the average college tuition for 1 child.

As you all know, it’s very difficult to get this job - why risk it for a few bucks? I’d much rather take a second job for the first year..

If you end up screwing up somehow and the company chooses to fire you the union has absolutely zero say in the process. Once off probation the union can and will fight for you.
Just something to consider..
This is exactly why I never picked up any open time during my first year. I just sat rsv and layed low. Plus you’re not getting paid much so I’d rather spend that time with my family.

I keep reading about you guys talking about being on probation ... Is it that big of a deal??
Obviously if you do something really stupid like lie, cheat, or steal i'm sure you're done but.....
is there anything else to really worry about??? I'm assuming just don't be a dumba$$??

Can you get fired on probation. Yes. Is it difficult to do. Yes.

If you don’t lie, steal, or get in a drunken fist fight in the hotel van you have to work pretty hard to get fired.

I personally wouldn’t use the fear of being fired prevent me from picking up a trip. Now whether it’s worth it given our first year pay rates thats another question.

Default G550 flying

Speaking of pay, Does UPS allow any Gulfstream 550 flying on your off days?

No.
Only Gulfstream 650 flying is allowed. Sorry.

Seriously. What does the type of the airplane have to do with anything? Except for the size of the airplane..
Put yourself in the business owner’s shoes. Are you allowed to double-dip your Gulfstream 550 flying with some §121 flying? No?? What a surprise..

You can do anything you want. Until you get caught that is. (which usually involves a violation or an incident/accident).
FAR §121, §135 or §91 flying has monthly and yearly flying hour limits. If you do ANY flying on the side you're responsible for making sure you’re within limits.

If you want to make it official you’ll need a permission from your ACP to do part-time flying. I had a WRITTEN permission to keep flight instructing during my probationary year. Some people told me it was an overkill but I just didn’t want to risk it. YMMV.

Every corporate job I ever had allowed me to do whatever extra flying I wanted to do on my days off. For that matter, my last “career” airline allowed guys to do extra flying on days off as well (you had to have a letter from the CP but everyone was approved that asked).

That being said, the policy here is no outside flying - so it is what it is. Not worth it to gamble the career doing something outside of the policy.
