Default UPS -A Plan Question

Was the UPS A plan(Defined Benefit) improved in your last contract negotiations? At FDX, we've gone through 2 or 3 negotiations with no improvement and our union(ALPA) is giving up on improving it.

Yes.

The DB was previously 1% FAE **or** a Flat Dollar Amount (FDA) of $3000/YOS CA - $2400/YOS FO.

Under Contract 2016, that increased 33% to $4000/3200 respectively.

In 2020 the FDA increases to $4100/3280, then to $4200/3360 in 2021.

Pension benefit is capped at 30 years of service, and operating just one leg as Captain entitles you to a Captain retirement.

IRS and ERISA requirements mean that the lifespan of the flat dollar requirement essentially has a 10 year maximum lifespan, and must be 're-upped' with each subsequent CBA.

(I might have some of these details a bit wrong, if so I'm sure somebody will be along shortly to correct my errors )

Appears your team is looking at transforming to a VB and drop the DB from the forum thread.

Flat dollar additions per contract has worked for us and has gone up with each negotiation.

When you die does your spouse continue to collect the retirement?

Depends on how much you like him or her.

There is a survivor benefit option that of course, comes with a penalty in your total compensation.

So you have to ask yourself one question when the time comes to check the box. Do you feel lucky? Just the right amount of mortality in that question.

Is the Flat Dollar part of an IRS “qualified plan”?
