UPS does that with every single pilot hired, regardless if their background is military, 91, 91K/135, 121 or a variety of some or all the above.
Think about it this way: by UPS creating a program for interns to go to AMF and gain real-world experience flying freight in twin turboprops before having the opportunity to wear brown polyester, they have created a small but steady stream of new pilots to fly their feeder aircraft instead of those former interns going to a regional airline to build the experience necessary to be considered for employment flying for UPS. It is a win/win for UPS, Ameriflight and UPS interns alike - and for interns it is a moderate risk but extremely high reward proposition. As to your question about 'what does the year-long internship consist of?', I cannot speak for the current program but as a former Training Center Co-op much of my duties revolved around program development. From what I read here there are plenty of people with tons of experience who would really like to work there. As far as the reward, all it says is candidates get an interview and ameriflights payscale is low. |
UPS Announces Training Program - FlightPath
Airline interns eligible for this program are aviation university graduates who hold COM-ASMEL certificates and most likely are also CFIs.
If UPS doesn’t demonstrate that this is a viable path for interns to fly Browntails, potential interns will dry up...as will that small bit steady stream of new pilots to fly UPS-contracted feeder aircraft for AMF. |

It appears to me UPS is ignoring the people in the front row with their hands up and calling on the ones out in the hall.
And ups has now taken it public by claiming “there are no good pilots left for us to hire so we will make our own” Yes Boiler I see all of your points and I am sure many newbies will be excited about the program. |

That's not having the experience Vital Signs is talking about. That's just getting started. Used to be that a pilot would need minimum of 5 years in a Continental Express ATR or something before he or she was even looked at.

Personally, think the UPS program is a shtick to keep up with FedEx and other airlines future pilot generator programs. Not a current pilot generator, that program is called "Atlas" |
Until I see the first 25 rear old ex ameriflight pilot come aboard from that program, I'll believe it when I see it.

Anyone know when the application opens up?

Program is in disarray to say the least right now. Manager running it got fired last week. She lawyered up and hopefully gets her job back. New guy got it dropped on top of his other responsibilities. They have a funding problem and some of the spots got cut. The second batch of interns had anyone who had the time to go to a regional leave. They all visited ameriflight and basically were told,"forget what UPS told you will be here for at least several years building competitive time, so suck it up." They were treated like crap by AMF and voted with their feet. UPS won't bring in any higher time peeps now because they can and do walk when the promises don't match reality. If you are low time and don't have a CFI this might not be a bad gig. But, you will still have to go somewhere to get "competitive time". Read the fine print carefully if you want to deal with this devil.

The flyby manager? You hope she gets her job back? Maybe I’m missing something...

What does the feeder world look like for UPS in a few years when the entry level airplanes at places like AMF are not getting flown due to lack of a pilot? Is this program trying to correct for that? I don’t think it could keep up. Maybe the pay will be that good, and someone will be happy to fly a metro around? |
