To each their own. I don’t find any of those things on the BG. I do use it to stay engaged. There’s otherwise no right or wrong. Just stay engaged.

To be fair, I never directly said "Don't read the B&G".

It can be a source for great information, but it can also be an echo chamber of (in my opinion, unwarranted) anger and bitterness that at times lacks bigger perspective. One has to have a healthy ability to separate wheat from chaff in order to find the nuggets of info (or seek out the historical IPA culture references)...but let's be honest, for a newhire with little individual frame of reference, that can be a VERY tall task!

There are absolutely some folks here that have legitimate reasons to be upset at how their careers have fared, or the dumb battles that they've had to fight along the way...but their experiences aren't necessarily the experiences of others, and differing experiences aren't a sign of weakness, lack of unity, etc.

Avoiding the B&G is a way to avoid some of the associated negativity - that's all. That's not to say people shouldn't read it, but perhaps viewing in moderation and taking it with some salt isn't a bad idea...

the B&G is great for buying/selling stuff or getting help with hobbies/projects.

everything else is a mine field.

An entertaining minefield!! Doesn't take long to figure out who the blowhards are; sad but they discount their credibility for future posts. Sounds like somewhere else I know...

Indeed.

What you are actually trying to address is different perspective. A, ‘bubble,’ is created when you think your perspective is more correct or better. If you were more attentive you would have...well first you would have realized you wrote a post to whine about people whining. But had you (and the others who are suddenly labeling me as a negative blowhard) paid attention you would have noticed that in the hundreds and hundreds of posts over the past 4 years I’ve made (aka FTFF & FTv2), I’ve strongly championed this job at this company. I’ve consistently sold the positives, the reasons to come here, highlighted all the great, unique things Brown has to offer and I’ve stringently argued against the haters/negativity. More than anyone else on these threads. So if for just 1 post in response to someone asking for my opinion on the matter, I acknowledge that there are some dark undertones here, perhaps consider it as someone trying to offer potential new hires a balanced view and not a simple case of useless whining and empty negativity....

And fightanfight, while your little emotional life lesson was quaint in its simplicity (though lacking any point) and that there is an element of truth to your working man’s perspective of appreciating how lucky we are to have what we have / nothing matters if you’re getting paid well kind of thing, consider there are different perspectives out there: You are content to do your shift and go home; I would like to do more. You don’t want anything more than a paycheck; I want to learn new things, grow as an professional. Different perspectives. Neither is more right or wrong, just different.

The point when I said I’m second guessing my decision to come here was to convey the experience I’m having here after a few years in. As I said in that post: “probably the best job in the world......but! I thought it was good to let potential new hires know that not everyone is dazzled by the dollars, there are some troubling aspects to this place, and to consider whether or not this place is a good fit for them. I then elaborated in case some out there might relate to my perspective. You want to label me as some entitled snowflake whatever - fine, doubt you’re capable of any deeper analysis anyway . FWIW, I was hesitant to make that post.

Flyphisher, thanks for your post a few pages back.

Potential new hires, sorry for the thread drift. Hope at least some of this had value.

The problem is that it (the B&G) has an accepted culture that proudly shuns civility. It doesn’t want to be professional or inclusive and until that changes participation will be low and we will continue to miss the opportunity to use it as the powerful tool it could be. IMHO.

Can anyone who has gone through recently copy-paste / paraphrase what these phone calls (letters?) say? When I went thru it all it was was a phone call asking if you could make a specific class, a urine test, then an email with info on hotel, class location, etc. We got a heads up email a few days before class of what fleet we had tentatively been assigned to.

The implications of this idea are at the core of what I didn’t want to talk about. Edit: And all I should have said about my second guessing.

First quoted stanza: True. You didn’t. Kinsella did. My bad.

Second quoted stanza: The only ones in my minds eye that have legitimate reasons to be upset at how their careers have fared would be the 109 furloughed. That I could see. Otherwise.....no. I don’t see it.

The BG: In learning the culture of working for UPS, the BG is invaluable. Warts and all. I think the discussions of dissension are good. It’s amazing to watch. For example: The JA Report thread is an excellent education for all new hires when read from beginning to end highlighting what UPS is all about and what it means to be an IPA member. We all have personal decisions to make over what UPS themselves have done....to themselves. I think overall it’s valuable.

And I like that it’s not anonymous. You put it out there fair and square.

The grass is not greener.....anywhere. I firmly believe that and with UPS being my fourth airline, feel I fairly comment on that.
