Guess that depends on your priorities . If you prioritize monthly schedule flexibility then you have BV days; if you want 4-6 weeks off straight you prioritize OCV. Individual decisions... sounds like something else I've heard somewhere. But I agree with you most choose max time off over schedule flexibility and that was your ultimate point.

It has nothing to do with priorities or individual decisions in the first few years. The days just aren't accrued.

I'd like to know how a new guy (less than 5 years) could drop a month of flying in ANC with 2 weeks or less of BV days, can you explain ? The question wasn't about dropping a few trips here and there in SDF for monthly flexibility.

I understand there is a limited amount of flexibility compared to some other airlines but if a guy needs some time off is there a way to drop a trip besides calling in sick? On the ANC 747 if a one month LOA was requested what are the odds of it being granted if outside of peak?
After a few years, I agree. OCV and BV days give you great options. I just didn’t think BV days are the answer to this question for a new guy that wants ANC B747. You’re probably right.

I am admittedly not overly familiar with ANC 74 schedules and didn't realize that all of the scheduled trips are in excess of 2 weeks long; the question was how do I drop a trip (not a month of flying) without having to call in sick. If that trip is less than 2 weeks then one could use BV days in year 2, if they chose to put all of their days in BV.

that is a risky strategy because every day of the trip would have to be approved for BV use, which is not automatic.

better off using OVC/slide.

you could post the trip on the board but longer trips are not as likely to be picked up.

Can't do it with 14 BV days, but here's how you can do it with one week of vacation—
Line up a single-trip pay period with a pay period in which you have vacation, such that the vacation week is within 48 hours of the beginning or end of the trip. Elect for OCV, and also elect to not restore your pay deficit. Entire pay period off.

See page 2 of the latest IPA OCV Guide (ver.12).
Fine print: you lose pay, which you may choose to restore the next four pay periods, but you do indeed turn one week of vacation into four weeks off.

No big deal. I blended the questions being asked into needing a month off. Who knows what the guy needs

.. is there a way to drop a trip besides calling in sick ?
.. On the ANC 747 if a one month LOA was requested ...?

BV days might not be the best option, as navigrato points out

At least Gloriousprofits already knows the climate we operate in ... I understand there is a limited amount of flexibility compared to some other airlines but ...

We basically have the option to work a lot (pick-up trips), or work very little (with OCV).
It takes a lot of seniority to have a small amount of schedule flexibility here. We can't even split trips on the trip board. It's an all or nothing system. At least its better than what we had before, but it compares poorly to other airlines.

Interesting ...

I wonder how easily that could be done in ANC the first few years on property.

Great point, and very unlikely given 74 manning today; fact is not all ANC trips are two weeks long. I was being mildly sarcastic with my two week comment since we all know that there are 74 trips less than two weeks. The question wasn't about dropping a month it was about getting out of a trip without having to call in sick. Maybe I misinterpreted the question, but I read it to say "I'm trying to avoid a trip for a family event/appointment and don't want to have to call sick." So one could bid around it to minimize the TAFB and then BV it. As pointed out, that would be much easier for a non-international trip.
