Thanks. I understand you bid by age. What I am specifically asking is that recently the company was curtailing the contract by creating separate new hire classes in which they ONLY offered the 747. They did this with 747-time pilots, is this still a practice that is happening.
UPS is a phenomenal job, I wouldn't quit, just trying to understand current practices. TIA.

Thank you to those that understood the question. I really don’t get the instant need to bash people and jump to call them entitled.
Maybe when your wife gets sick, or your tied to a certain hospital, or you have a specific need to stay where you are and simply want to know something about a company from its pilots you’ll get it.
Guess what? I’m 40, I’ve flown all over the world, and my family has specific needs that I am trying to accommodate. Spare me your “move along” and “this place isn’t for you” attitudes, I’m a grown man asking real life questions. Some of you are just insulting.

Dear Readers,
99% of all UPS pilots have no problem whatsoever playing nice 99% of the time. Oh, and night flying and 24-hour layovers and institutionalized payroll "mistakes" and Rockford catering can drive anybody to put on their crabby pants from time to time.
Across three domiciles and three fleets across 12+ years here, I can offer that we have one seriously great pilot group here, hand on the heart.

Gents, it’s not entitlement, it’s called freedom. Freedom earned from having built a strong enough resume to have career options, which from the sounds of it, some of you never had.
Potatoechip,
Guys like Whalesurfer, Salty, and Boiler are more indicative of the mean temperament within our pilot group compared to what you’ve been reading in response to your question, so please consider that if you’re put off by the chatter here. And remember, some guys guys have had a very raw deal from UPS; it’s easy to criticize their negativity, harder to emphasize...
To your question:
If you’ve done your research and UPS is to your liking (note: FedEx is practically the same thing), I would seriously consider biting the bullet and dealing with the commute to ANC. Which leads me to ask, where would you be commuting from? There are some backdoor routes to get up there that aren’t so bad.
Also, consider that there is a serious training backlog for the whale and you might find yourself being home for quite a bit of time during your first 6-9 months. I heard of one guy who only started OE at 8.5 months on the property.
Last, reach out to the hiring peeps when you interview, get the pool letter, on one of your Poolie updates, or when you get the initial call for class - sorry, not sure which stage in the process you are - and mention your preference and reasons. No guarantee but you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, right? Just don’t give them an ultimatum.
As a member of the 2014-15 newhire crowd, I can say we’ve had a great ride and while I would have been highly hesitant to have taken the ANC base back then, in retrospect I would kick my own back side for turning down the gig over ANC. 18 months goes by mighty quick.
Best of luck.

BTW, the Whale training backlog is dwindling rapidly, last I heard, evidenced by good number of new hires being assigned recently. We went from having one full time sim and one part time sim to THREE full time sims, this has helped tremendously. We have leased the MIA sim full time rest of 2019 (unknown for 2020), plus OE is moving a bit faster. For the last year or so the wait for initial and OE was long, not so much anymore.
We all have different situations, I had 2 folks in my class assigned 74 that have had a rough time commuting, sacrificed a lot of family time, definitely not been easy, and by the time they bid out and quit the ANC commute it will be 2+ years the way our system bids fall. I am certainly not one to criticize someone for not wanting to commute to ANC. What I will say is this is a very good job, with a bright future, tremendous earnings potential, most certainly NOT PERFECT mind you. Except for the oddball here and there, which are very few, this pilot group is outstanding! And we will have to continue fighting tooth and nail for everything, but personally I feel very fortunate to be here, especially since THOUSANDS want this job. It’s like this job wants to test you first year (or 2 or 3 if commuting involuntarily to ANC). As many very knowledgeable folks have said, this job is not for whiners, this job requires big boy pants and ability to find out crap independently. Nothing is easy here. But once you figure it out, it’s a damn good gig, notwithstanding the occasional getting it up the you know where 😬.

The self proclaimed expert usually shows up here to let everyone know how much he knows! His reputation on the line precedes him, had several guys bring up his name recently. For only being on the property a couple years he has managed to learn everything there is to know about ups and the IPA and **** people off at the same time.
