Default PepsiCo Executive to Become UPS Finance Chief

Years later we’re still recovering from the Davis Doctrine of mis-management. Let’s hope this new era of hiring top management ‘outsiders’ won’t turn into a Davis2.0 nightmare.

United Parcel Service named company outsider Brian Newman as finance chief, a move that comes as the shipping giant looks to benefit from the fallout between delivery competitor FedEx and Amazon.

UPS's stock is down 3.84% since the start of the month.

"I am very pleased to welcome Brian to UPS's senior management. He will contribute to our drive for improved growth and operating performance, and he will support our strategies focused on the long term success of the company," said David Abney, chairman and chief executive of UPS.

I’m guessing there are some seriously torqued off UPS lifers in Atlanta right now who thought it was their turn.

My history at UPS is limited, but the Davis era was all internal blood, and he hated the airline. Abney “seems” to get the value of the airline, and the value of injecting fresh blood, a la Scott Price, the investments in the company infrastructure and airline, focus on the customer, etc. We are still playing catch up, but the tide seems to be turning. And it also seems Amazon’s troubles are getting broader, from a growth and competition point of view, they are getting attacked from all angles, and maybe, just maybe maintaining a good relationship with UPS will become more important, especially after Fedex dumped them. Nobody has a crystal ball, but the winds, after many years, seem to be shifting slightly, and I emphasize slightly because UPS management should NEVER underestimate our fierce and respected competitor, FEDEX!! And Amazon of course, the saying applies, trust but verify 😬

In my opinion, UPS's time honored policy of promoting from within, has been a failure. Sort of like marrying ones sister, for generations. The injection of fresh blood and fresh marketing ideas can only pay dividends in the long run. Good luck to Brian Newman in his new position. As a further benefit, I hear that there'll be Pepsi vending machines, offering free soda, at all stations throughout the organization. Seriously, Good luck to Mr. Newman.

The injection of a new blood back in 08 of Davis is what ups is paying for today. He was responsible for 2013 peak debacle and the company contracting severely. The furlough and the lack of manning and airframe and smearing ups brand name happened all under his watch. He was the only outsider that was promoted into that position and see where we're as result. I just hope their outsider this time is different than last.

Pepsi C-level guy in CokeTown...interesting.

I’m worried less about an external CFO than any beancounter (let alone outsider) CEO. Abney was an operations guy, and it seems to be showing...

Strongly disagree. For one, ups should never gone public. Period! Quality over quality turned into dividend over longterm goals. Davis was an outsider and this company will never truly recover from the mayhem he caused with his ‘cost-saving’ tactics. I wish the new guy the best, truly do, but only time will tell if they’ve learned from the past.

PS. The vending machines rumor would make sense. It’d offer them huge savings in the pension costs. Post-retirement longevity would drop even further.

Agree, a beancounter CEO would’ve been the ultimate nightmare..
