..and no, I don’t believe senior FOs are making more $$ than junior captains. Well, maybe they do but only IF they sell all of their vacation and pick up tons of JA/OT.
So why would a captain choose to downgrade? To work more days? Don’t see the logic?

For senior guys/gals here - has anyone ever downgraded before?

I’d be shocked if a single captain chooses to downgrade. Not impossible I guess but I’d be very surprised. What’s that saying? “$$ talks and b/s walks”?

A buddy of mine, who’s on Airbus, thinks we’ll witness the beginnings of ‘senior folks’ exodus from all sdf fleets to the 74. His prediction:

SDF 74CA - ‘89 or earlier.
SDF 74FO - ‘90 or earlier.
ANC 74CA - 2001 or earlier. (!)

Why?
He thinks we’ll see some VERY senior folks, maybe even current instructors on other fleets, wanting to come over to the whale. Yes, even to ANC just to get checked out and eventually be able to teach in SDF.

Such a scenario didn't even cross my mind but it kind of makes sense.
We’ll know soon enough I guess.
No doubt 74 SDF CA will go super senior, FO will be very interesting. An 89 hire would be top 10% on any other fleet would you trade that for bottom of 74 FO list? Some may, I wouldn’t.

Unfortunately the days of ANC guys picking up a 27 hr JA hot to maybe fly a PHL/EWR turn are over. I loved hearing those stories.

As you said we will know soon enough.

Look at the number of senior FOs who were previously captains (displaced) and have chosen to remain FOs. They have the retirement credit for having been in the left seat. Look at some of the ANC MD captains (who don't live in ANC) who chose to bump to 74 FO instead of remaining a captain.

There are some talking about it and it has more to do with QOL than anything. But as anything, it may be just talk.

That could backfire. On SDF MD, the Captain and FO lines are different. Don't know if the B747 has gone that way or not.

I am not ambitious enough to look at individual trips on lines, I guess one could find a line that had a bulk of flying with OE guys. It wouldn't be easy, but it would be worth it.

You should bid it

I flew an oddball line a few months ago and a senior fo took it. I asked him why and he said he was hoping I'd maybe get some ioe students and he'd be displaced.

I told him that he should have first hoped that I was an ioe instructor
