What's the likelihood of flying less than the min at UPS? Of course, taking less pay...

Is the typical month 4 trips? 3 Trips? Can you drop easily?

Thanks

There is no way to straight drop trips at UPS. Your only option to get rid of trips is through our Trip Board, you post a trip and hope that another pilot picks it up. That is about it.

I have had a high rate of success with the trip board. Dropping shorter 1&2 day trips

Same here. I screwed up my bid recently and got all day trips which isn’t good for me. Was able to get rid of all of them via the trip board and then pickup better trips out of open

Maybe he's a commuter and doesn't want to spend money on hotels everyday he flies those day turns? 🤷*♂️

Trip board is a very useful tool, but if your line credit is under guarantee (75 hours) you can get penalized pretty harshly.

Thanks guys - what does 'penalized pretty harshly' entail? Your contract requires you to fly the guarantee, or....?

Appreciate the info!

You are paid 75 hours (guarantee) even if your line is worth less, for example 65 hours.

If you have a 76 hour line you will be paid 76 hours. If you drop a 10 hour trip on the trip board you will be paid 66 hours. If you then pick up a 10 hour trip you will be paid 76 hours.

If you have a 65 hour line and fly it you will be paid 75 hours. If you drop a 10 hour trip you will be paid 55 hours. If you then pick up a 10 hour trip you will be paid 65 hours. So you lose the buffer.

So if you know you need/want to drop some trips you would be wise to bid a line that meets/exceeds (or is close to) 75 hour guarantee to minimize the (potential) lost buffer.

Our guarantee is 75 hours. If you have a line that credits say 68 hours, you still get paid 75 and you have what’s called a 7 hour buffer. If you put say a 6 hour trip on the board and someone picks it up, you loose that buffer. The 6 hours gets deducted from your 75 hour guarantee, so your guarantee drops to 69 hours and your line credit drops to 62. IF you want to get back to 75, that is where the buffer comes in. Since your line credit dropped to 62, you know have to pick up trips worth 13 hours to get back to 75, not just the 6 you dropped.

Clear as mud?

Depending on the situation, not as bad as it sounds. If you get a line where you want to make large improvements, move multiple trips around, etc., one philosophy is to just disregard the buffer and trade, drop, pickup to rebuild your line to an acceptable credit value. Otherwise there are BV days that can be used (single banked vacation days) without losing the buffer. If you wonder what happens if you get sick and call in, you won’t lose your buffer there either. Same for a fatigue call. It’s only for drops (crew->crew giveaway) and OT trades that are off less value that what you are dropping where your buffer is jeopardized. Good news is that most lines with a buffer are within a couple of hours of guarantee (75).
