Technically, every trip is contractually required to start and end in whatever domicile you are based in. If there are DHs or paid tickets to position/deposition you on a particular pairing you can skip going to domicile and “deviate,” however you choose. DH’s & CMLs are common on most fleets but not in the majority by any means.

Thank you very much. Fully understood.

If I am based in ICN for example, is it possible for me to pick up an open time from ICN?
i know some atlas pilots are doing it so just wondering if that is possible to work it out at UPS too

That is not one of our 4 bases.....but IF you lived in base and wanted to pick up some open time there is nothing stopping you other than the set hour limitations.

Got it. I was curious if i could pick up open times from other than the official bases if there were trips starting out of the 4 bases. Thank you!

You can pick up from other domiciles within 96 hours of the trip starting.

But I think what you would want in your case would be to pick up a trip that starts with a deadhead to ICN and just start from home. That certainly exists but I wouldn’t say it’s common.

While you would probably be able to swing the occasional sweet deal that enables you to get paid for a trip that started in ANC or SDF and DH’d to Incheon, it would probably not make up for the commute. There are a lot of direct flights to ANC so you could make living there work, but understand that you would need to be able to suck up at least 18 months on a light twin out of MIA (worst case scenario) before bidding up to ANC. Your scenario would not be the worst commute I’ve heard of here. Evidently, we have pilots living in Puerto Rico and commuting to ANC by choice.

I’ve been playing around with the jumpseat website and it seems there are way fewer domestic flights on Mondays. Nothing leaving some larger gateways, and it seems like SDF-ANY only produces a couple international flights. Can anyone explain that?

Network activity drives Browntail activity. Generally speaking the domestic air network runs Monday night through Saturday morning, and historically there are practically no domestic Browntails on Monday mornings as volume is trucked to the maximum extent possible over the weekend.

There is a wave of inbounds to SDF Sunday morning and 2nd Day departures from SDF on Sunday afternoon, and only a tiny handful of departures (primarily international) Monday morning. There's almost no inbound to SDF Monday morning, with the domestic network fully spooling up again Monday afternoon/night.

Postal volume has caused some significant domesticnetwork changes - there's now a 2nd Day outbound departure bank from SDF on Saturday afternoon, as an example, so that flight activity is changing somewhat.

Thank you for the explanation! Does this ever create an issue/difficulties if your trip starts Sunday/Monday AM?
