2-3 years ago? Absolutely.. ..but for the last year and half or more I don’t think that’s been the case.
74 sims aren’t as utilized as they were a few years ago. Back then MX guys were happy if they got the sims for 2-3 hours per night. Now? They typically can have them for 6-10 hours a day. On weekends maybe even 12 hours.
MIA sim has 2, maybe 3 sessions a day. Occasionally 4. Weekends 1 or 2. It varies every week/month of course but yes, typically there are openings to be found and we could easily train more.
From what I hear they might be using our SDF sim some more BUT you should still be able to find some super early or -late sessions. In the past it didn’t matter. The sim was booked up no matter the time of the day you’re willing to train.
Note, our ANC sim isn’t even up and running. It’ll be down for heavy maintenance for at least 3 months and yet you can find openings in the SDF and MIA sims? Few years ago that’d have been unheard of. Several 74 instructors are flying the line so there’s capacity there too. (even though they made some of the SDF based instructors fly the line due to the many uncovered OT trips.)
I’m not sure what it looks like on other fleets BUT the school house could take on more. The 76 and MD sims at the Sprague Training Center don’t seem to be used at full capacity either. They seem to be idle many early mornings and late evenings. (unless the 76 and md flyers are so smooth the sims barely move? I guess that’s a possibility.. ;-) )
Hopefully many more new-hires to come. School house can handle them.

Out of curiosity, what are you guys/gals basing your assertions on? I’m not saying you’re wrong. I just don’t see our training capacity being maxed out?

UPS 747 Sims
Miami Sim is only used for initial qual through the MV then students go to either SDF or ANC to complete LOS1-LOS3 and the LOE. This is due to the Miami sim having the legacy FMC.
With the ANC sim being down till the end of September that leaves the SDF 74 sim to cover all CQ6 (1 day), CQ12 (3 day), LOS1 - LOS3 and LOE events. IECQ 2021 (instructor requal) is also starting around the end of August which sucks up lots of sim and instructor availability. It appears to me that the 74 SDF sim is running at or near capacity. With that said some days may have open time as schedules change for numerous reasons.
Once the Anchorage sim is up and re-certified hopefully the initial training ramps back up. Things should get even better when the 3rd 74 sim is up and running next year??
But this is UPS so who knows!!

What are the latest rumors on what the SDF 74 flying mix will be? I’ve heard similar to old MD, a good mix of domestic and intl. I’ve also heard mostly domestic turns, with bit of international. 1st bid pack isn’t much help.

Vacancy Bid for July 2020
Vacancies available for newhires based on the July 2020 bid:
27 A300 SDF
19 747 ANC
19 MD11 SDF
19 757 SDF
5 757 ONT
3 757 SDFZ
Combined with remaining vacancies from last November’s bid and the drop from the last newhire class, I get a rough ballpark of the following vacancies for the remainder of 2020 hiring (NOTE: is not and will not be 100% accurate, but close based upon newhire attrition, etc.):
44 747 ANC
39 MD11 SDF
32 A300 SDF
15 757 SDF
9 757 MIA
6 757 ONT
3 757 SDFZ
