She clearly mentioned investing in down times as a competitive strategy, also saying hunkering down is a non starter. Don’t know what you mean by not investing in our network, again, she emphasized the $5B+ CAPEX this year, as the $5B+ for the last few years. So if you go back and research, the company has been investing in our network big time, that is why we can handle peak level volume in July. Just because we did not/have not ordered additional airplanes doesn’t mean we are not investing in the network, which we clearly have been.
Oh, and visionless? Hardly. Again, you may not like her vision/strategy, but she clearly has one. And those that mention short term profits, I don’t see that at all, she repeated over and over long term sustainability, quality of revenue vs quantity which goes to efficient use of resources to maximize profitability, IOW, she is not interested in a race to the bottom. Better, deeper customer relationships, not chasing business just for the sake of it.
While of course I would like more airplanes, the level of uncertainty right is simply too high, prudent to take a wait and see approach.

With her background in finance and as the CFO at Home Depot, I would expect some "bean counting." However SWA Gary Kelly was also a CFO prior to becoming CEO (albeit, CFO at the same company, not an outside hire) and their financial strength has always been industry leading.
Time will tell. Cargo will never go away and UPS will always be a desirable career destination for Pilots.

I guess what gives some of us pause is we remember the past. An outsider bean counter becoming CEO deserves scrutiny until we see what she has in store for us. Not that we can do anything about it.

We still have an additional 12 Whales coming, roughly 40% more capacity for the routes it serves. Cautious approach, no doubt, I am worried more about the MD replacement, which the Whale is too big. While we may be getting 5 more, doesn’t mean replacing them shouldn’t be a priority, given their age and parts availability.
While I wasn’t here during the Davis era, I do know pretty well how much he set back not only the airline, but the company in general, hence the $5B+ in CAPEX the last few years, it has to be done and why Carol pressed on with it for 2020.
No, I have ZERO stock on the company, but just like my Brown colleagues I have a big invested interest in the success of the company. Some people are bitter just because, I take a half and half approach. Business evolves. That is a fact of life.

Great quarter, but I’m not sure you’ll see this new CEO buy another airplane during her tenure. She is a cost cutter and a right sizer, and already passed on additional 747s. Stock price, shareholder value, max efficiency were the mantras of the conference call. Hoping we don’t have another ceo that won’t wash an airplane for 7 years..
