Post furlough record pace? Not sure what you mean? For the first time since UPS Airlines’ founding we now have over 3,000 pilots on property (~3,100). Is that what you meant by “record pace”?

More referring to the annual number of new hires since 2014. Total number is definitely a record already.

The real question is what is the long term number of pilots the company thinks it needs. That and retirements will ultimately drive the pace of hiring.

Guessing Carol will give us a hint on June 9th.

I see, thanks.

Don’t think the company cares at all. As long as Dr. Carolkian gets her carbon-neutral, diamond-studded, organic and Pra(v)da-designed platinum parachute.

Help me understand how the junior captain award went from a 2014 hire to a 2007 hire with the last bid?

And why it will probably stay around the 2007 level?

Because bypassing FOs decided to upgrade on the January bid. The current junior CA is still a 2015 hire, awarded in the Nov 19 bid which skewed junior due to opening of the SDF 747 domicile.

Depending on the total size and number of CA positions on the next Vacancy bid (which has come out in June/July the last few years), the junior CA award may fall back into "new guy" territory.

Something else to keep in mind, UPS didn’t hire between 2007 and 2014. The difference in overall seniority between a late 2007 Captain and an early 2014 Captain is literally a few numbers on the master seniority list. They’re right next to eachother.

Just rough numbers because I'm too lazy to be precise, there are about 500 pilots hired 2007 and earlier who are bypassing upgrade right now.

As those people get closer to retirement, meet X number below them on the captains list, etc., they will upgrade. It's definitely not linear and is very dependent on the size of the vacancy bid. I think it would have to be pretty substantial to see it dip to -14 hires and below again.

Bypassing no more FO here. 2004-2007 hires have had a much different experience here than those hired since 2014 (New hires). I spent YEARS sitting 12 am to 12 pm reserve on days I wanted off because I was tenuously holding the bottom seat of a fleet I was happy with. Over time the greatest thing about this company is that we all find a niche that works for us. For me, I don’t like reserve nor base trips and as such bypassed until I was assured that I would not have to experience that in my new seat. As far as the next bid goes - several of my 05/06 hire mates will be pulling the trigger. Probably a few years before we see a 5 year Captain again but who knows. The bright side is almost half of the seniority list wasn’t on property for the last contract and numbers say roughly a 1/3 of the of the to 1/2 will retire in the next 36 months, Time will tell.

Of course they are; they vividly remember the havoc and destruction during the “spend $100 to save a penny” Scott Davis’ years. Now that his loyal cheerleader has become the new “sweating assets” ceo they fear similar stagnation which explains them pulling the upgrade trigger..
