I told them "if you want me there tomorrow I'll hit the road tonight but out of respect for my company I'd prefer to give my job a 2 week notice". They had a chuckle to that answer haha

On the other extreme, I said back in Dec I could do 2 weeks but asked if they could wait until Aug due to financial hooks my current employer has in me. I basically said that I'd make a better FO for the company if I could avoid the financial hardship of writing a huge check just prior to going on first year pay.

Man if I were you I would call Monday and ask to be put in a class. You can’t possibly owe your current employer enough to delay nearly a year of seniority. We are in the middle of unprecedented hiring by UPS standard and there is no telling how long we will hire at this rate. The seniority you are giving up is worth potentially 100s of thousands of dollars. If I were you I would work out a payment plan with your current employer or do whatever you have to do to get in the first class.

If you don’t believe me maybe one of our furloughed guys can put it in prospective of what 109 seniority numbers means.

You very well could "lose" multiples of that across your career from being 200+ seniority numbers lower.

That said, you gotta do what you gotta do...

Just expanding on that, but paying back 6 figure debt is not easy even at our FO income level. Family, mortgage, kids school, etc play a role. Comparing todays debt to future earning isn’t always so simple. You’ve got to enjoy the ride instead of just playing for the end. I’ve been forced to make decisions that financial people would disagree with, but did so in order to live a less stressful life in the present. Have to live for both.

Yea, this is the driving reason for my decision. I get the lost earnings argument but I'm 45 and only plan to work 10-12 years and then punch. That still leaves the furlough threat but you can't live your life in fear of furlough... gotta live for today. I know many will think I'm crazy but I'm looking at the long term plan.

…and yet you took a short term plan solution.. Water under the bridge of course but there are plants of zero interest credit card offers, that’s how I “subsidized” my first or really my first two years back then and I’d do it all over again..

Teamsters contract expires July 31, 2023. They don't have to ask for permission to strike. They can just do it. That's around 325,000 UPS employees. Did you consider that?

You are aiming at early retirement - I would get that earlier class date and ask your previous employer for a reasonable payment plan.
