Default UPS Feeder Truck Driver to Pilot

Are there any former UPS Feeder Drivers who went on to become a UPS Pilot? A friend of mine has several questions that I (as a FedExer) can not answer.

Any responses or PMs are greatly appreciated it.

Thanks,

Going from memory, I don’t think it helps to get an interview at all. Could be slightly beneficial during the interview and background check but could just as well be detrimental if you didn’t have a positive working history or leave on good terms.

I worked at a package sort. I don't think it really helped me until I went to a job fair. But I had TPIC and heavy time as well.

Without having worked at either I’m just going with common sense here:
At some point you’ll need to leave to go fly full time. Tell your supervisor/manager that you hope to return someday as a pilot and could they please consider that writing a LOR.
Now put this person on your Christmas card list. 5-10-12 years from now they’ll remember you.
Now this will not help you get an interview or substitute for lack of experience but during the HR interview it may very well give you another point.
For sure it would not hurt.

Former part-timer during college. As per above it was pretty clear that it didn't help me get noticed, but once my app was flagged it may have helped with the score, not sure. It definitely came up during the interview and seemed like it had a positive effect. They keep records, and they pull them. They knew about ever sick call from 1999.

Default Airlines to Feeders to UPS airline

I was an Eagle FO from 06-08 then Day Jet till they went out of business in late 08.

Of course nobody was hiring in 08.

I went to work for UPS in 10 as a sorter then driver. I have been in feeders for 7 years (12 total with UPS). I did not think I would want to go back to flying. But now I think I do.

I have about 2750 total hours 1500 turbine no pic. I have not flown in years and wonder if I would have any shot if I regained currency and applied.

I make good money in feeders (tractor trailer) $135-$140,000. I work a lot but I am home nightly and have the weekends off.

The money would be better of course at the airline. I would have to commute.bBut I would still have more time off than I currently have.

Mostly thinking out loud here. Curious if I would even have a shot. Thanks for reading.

Man, you sound like the perfect candidate to get on with a regional, upgrade quickly and then apply to Purple or Brown or wherever you’d like, really.

UPS still has that 1000 TPIC "requirement" but it does sound like you could get in quick with a regional and upgrade in no time. Not sure of your current schedule, but if you value your weekends/holidays/time off (greater than 11-12 days a month), that's something to expect to have little control over for years. Pay with the regionals has been improving considerably in the past few years so that won't be as terrible at least. Good luck

As others have said, you need 1,000 TPIC. SkyWest and other regionals are hiring direct entry captains, which you probably qualify for. Do that for 18 months and you would meet the mins and have a good shot at the job. They would love you in the interview, your challenge will be getting past the computer to score the interview. Due to the shortages of pilots at regionals, your income might not even take a hot until you hit year one here. Good luck whatever you choose.
