Default UPS training while on mil PTDY & term. leave

I recently found out from a friend that Delta doesn't allow retiring military to enter training while on PTDY status. Does anyone know if UPS makes such a distinction? For context, I will have 70 days of terminal leave accrued when I reach retirement. I can add to that 20 days of permissive TDY allowing me to walk off base 90 days prior to my actual retirement date with no more military obligations (I will have had my final out processing appointment before I leave). So I would start permissive TDY on 1 May, end on 20 May, start terminal leave 21 May and end 31 July with a retirement date of 1 August. Would UPS allow me to take a training date between 1-20 May (assuming they have training in May and offer me a class date in May)?

Thanks and sorry for the hyper-specific question!

When I was in your shoes 5 years ago, they specifically asked for what date I would start terminal leave. The airlines (not just UPS) have been burnt by guys being aggressive with their mil separation dates. If they ask, be upfront about what each date is and your obligations or lack thereof. It’s their call to make and my guess is they would rather have you start a couple weeks later and not have to worry about you and your training partner’s training being derailed by AFPC changing their minds on when your PTDY started.

I did precisely that last year with no issues. Final out was Jan with a 1 Feb UPS class start date and 1 May retirement date. They didn't say anything about it. You will need to sign something from legal on the mil side though saying you won't embarrass the mil while working on terminal. No issues as anything that would get you in trouble there would get you dismissed from UPS training as well.

You’re retiring, so your final out date is effectively your retirement date. You’re not coming back after your final out. I wasn’t required to sign anything with regard to working while I’m on PTDY. They only care about your availability date and you’re available after your final out.

Agreed, I’m in this exact situation and received this answer from the AF. And no carriers have asked a distinction between PTDY and terminal.

Fwiw Delta specifically asked for a copy of my terminal leave orders. I don’t recall ups being that specific.

Thanks for all the replies! Will be sure to be clear which dates are PTDY and which dates are terminal leave.

This issue is up to the individual company. I had the same experience with Delta, couldn't start on PTDY.. and then COVID hit.

Just be available when you say you can start. I don’t think UPS or anyone cares if you’re on terminal or permissive.

I would start as soon as possible…just don’t go AWOL.
