Due to no new hire classes we are currently shrinking as a pilot group. We almost surpassed 3500 and are down to almost 3400. It’s unknown when the company will resume hiring with “official” rumors being as soon as early summer. I wouldn’t be shocked to see no new hires until late this year.

Considering the IPA is querying UPS on whether or not they have any plans for furloughing pilots (they said they don’t) I would think it’s a pretty safe bet no hiring for the remainder of 2023. If I had to guess I’d say we only take on 20-50 in 2024, if any at all.

The upcoming schedule bid will have plenty of opportunities for guys to take VLOA/RDG. These are options for pilots to either not work or work less while maintaining benefits. The good news is this provides a buffer during slow times like this to help prevent furloughs (which I don’t see as likely!). The bad news for our poolies is that classes are unlikely over the next few months. If you have a good offer elsewhere that you haven’t already jumped on, do it now. We will resume hiring at some point or we will shrink dramatically over the next few years.
