Default Privatization of USPS

Any thoughts on how this move could affect our newly awarded contract with the USPS?

Lots or not at all. Without knowing the language of the contract, what Trump is actually going to do, and next week’s Powerball numbers we will just have to wait and see. My guess is the USPS will continue to offer next day air and we will continue to carry it. Trump could send airmail back to the Air Force, but it’s been a minute since they had that mission.

I carried mail several times in the Air Force. I think we just carry APO mail.

Congress would have to be the ones that privatize it. And it would only work if they remove all of their influence from it... no union protections, not idiotic rate rules for 1st class mail, no laws prohibiting competition, and no other micromanaging from the government. In other words if Congress completely divests the USPS from the government and allows a true free market in labor and competition for 1st class mail, then it might have a chance to succeed. Otherwise it will be the same old crappile.

What problems do you have with USPS? I use it all the time and have never lost anything in transit. Always works great. Also subsidizes remote locations like rural areas.

Have you looked at their financials? Also they are incredibly slow, and their service keeps getting worse and more expensive.

I don't want USPS privatized...but it absolutely has issues that need fixed.

Many USPS distribution centers experienced significant (2-8 week) delays in Q4'24 and Q1'25, including well before the Christmas peak, though it has recently improved. I've had parcels lost and have gotten bills weeks after they were due. Louisville & Indianapolis were particularly bad, but issues were reported in media all over the place.

They are not allowed to collect money, it goes into the general fund, but that's not really a problem with the USPS, that's a problem with congress.

Everything gets more expensive. You offset it by making more money.

I use priority mail all the time, from Alaska, usually 3 days for anywhere in the country, like FL.

The only way the issues with it get fixed is if it is no longer run by the government.

This is not a factual statement.

Have you? Eliminating the service from the govt’s books would be equivalent to a rounding error. If you want to tackle govt spending issues, usps is one of the last places to start.
