UPS Ground School Instructor
 

I saw UPS posted a Ground School Instructor position at SDF on their jobs-ups.com page. Is there any preferential hiring at UPS if one works as a Ground School Instructor for a certain period of time or are you considered the same as someone applying from off the street? Just wondering if it would be a good way to get your foot in the door at UPS to hopefully one day fly the line as a FO? Thanks in advance for any info, Happy New Year!

I spoke to one our ground instructor and he said ups was adamant about not hiring nor wanting anyone to use that route to the cockpit. ...That was couple of yes ago

I don't get why people think like this. "I want to be a ground instructor, so I can fly the line someday." If your goal is to fly. Then apply for a FO position.

sometimes it's only way to get your foot in but not in this case. Had a buddy applied as a dispatcher and had much easier transition to the cockpit once he met all the qualifications.

Maybe it's because FedEx does just that? ..or because some people applied a while back but they haven't been fortunate enough to score an interview?

FlyArmy11 - I do not recommend the ground instructor route. Basically it's a one-way street. Yes, there have been cases where people worked as ground instructors, later end up quitting to build up their flight experience and eventually came back as pilots, however they're a tiny minority here.
Several years ago I got to talk to a 75/76 ground instructor who was hoping he'd teach for few years and eventually move over to the pilot seat or at the very least to have a guaranteed interview.
Nah, some 15 years later he's given up on that.. :-(

I'd suggest you try to network instead and attend job fairs if you can. Your user name implies former/current military? See if people from your unit ended up at ups and reach out to them. They might be able to help.

I am hoping being a driver helper this season will help me! Plus I got a bonus each week for just showing up when I said I would. Those drivers work hard and are like rock stars during Christmas. It's amazing how happy folks are to get a package. Like I said before my pilot application. was active until I was hired as a driver helper then it went to "on file." Hoping something happens in 2017.

It WILL help you when you get the call. HR people interviewing you were all throwing boxes or driving package cars at some point..

The best way to try and get your foot in the door, especially with so much hiring taking place, is to first assure that your application is updated and active. Secondly, attend as many Job Fairs as possible and third, no matter your flying background , network-network-network. Be relentless and you'll catch your break. Good luck!

What is the schedule and pay like for ground school instructors?

AFAIK the only ground school instructors that have been "upgraded" to a flying position are the ones "promoted" to a management flying position (NURP). NOT something you want to consider.
