This is a fascinating topic. I have my share of struggles getting shadowy areas to come out in my images while bright areas tend to wash out. I like to photograph airplanes which is very demanding in terms of range. Moving targets require quick shutter speeds which cause tonal lows to suffer and get blacked out, and you generally end up cropping the image of those areas. The new image stabilization technology helps by allowing slightly longer exposure times but there is only so much it can do.
Black and white film photographers used to prefer cloudy, overcast days for the easy range conditions on such days. B&W doesn't care about the color saturation advantages associated with sunny conditions. The radiance is less on cloudy days and the resulting image has better definition in all areas. B&W film photographers still tend to use tripods, but even with a tripod there was still a lot of work left to do in the darkroom. It was not uncommon for a day's worth of shots to take weeks to process in the darkroom before all the range issues were worked out.
Nice image, please post more of these. They go a long way toward simulating how things look to a person seeing an actual scene.

Photomatrix is the most popular by far
HDR photo software & plugin - Tone Mapping, Exposure Blending & HDR Imaging for photography
Dynamic HDR is another
Dynamic Photo HDR, high dynamic range imaging software with Anti-Ghosting
Of course you can merge 3 or more bracketed exposures in Photoshop too.
A tripod and a camera that can take bracketed exposures can open the door to a fun new technique!
