I am assuming by the timing of the post and the threesome in this picture is at the Reno air races.

On another point, I may be completely wrong, but it looks like you can see the rotation of the P-38's props, which is why both engines were critical on it. Anyone else?

Reno Air Races is correct, and yes I concur on the props spinning away from each other, making them both critical.

taken from wikipedia:

"The YPs were substantially redesigned and differed greatly in detail from the hand-built XP-38. They were lighter, included changes in engine fit, and the propeller rotation was reversed, with the blades rotating outwards (away) from the cockpit at the top of their arc rather than inwards as before. This improved the aircraft's stability as a gunnery platform."

Would they both really be "critical" though? If both props are spinning away from each other, one engine would be just as detrimental to Vmc as the other. But yes, single engine characteristics would suck regardless of which engine was shot to H - E - double hockey sticks.

Cool photo by the way. The last time I saw an F-22, it was intercepting a GA plane that flew into a TFR without a flight plan or squawk code. Which P-38 was that?

Believe it or not that P-38 has quite a story behind her. They call her Glacier Girl Glacier Girl - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
