that's pretty cool

flightfreak86 10-09-2008 08:26 PM

Great series of photos.

AZFlyer 10-09-2008 10:43 PM

Awesome photos! I love watching the moose take off. I saw several depart one after another from KIWA not too long ago. I think each of the moose drivers were trying to out do each other to see who could do the best impersonation of an F-15 on departure. Those guys ripped those suckers off the runway!

JPilot23 10-10-2008 07:46 AM

awesome shots!!

LeoSV 10-10-2008 10:39 AM

MORE PICS PLEASE!!! I can't imagine how much fun it would be to fly in a group like that!! I remember one time that I flew next to another 172 for a 3 hour flight, and I was having so much fun the entire 3 hours, and we didn't even do anything crazy or exciting. Perhaps I'm just lame.. lol

Moonwolf 10-10-2008 12:54 PM

Are those shots from around the central washington area? Maybe YKM for the landing sequence?

Moonwolf 10-10-2008 12:55 PM

they must be because i see mt.rainer in the last one. :)

MOOSEDRVR728 10-10-2008 04:01 PM

Its just out of tacoma, crossing over the cascades pretty close to YKM

MOOSEDRVR728 10-10-2008 04:01 PM

But the other formation ones are in central washington, by moses lake, ellensburg area.

Can you post one of what it looks like when you're doing 20,000 fpm on the down escalator?

No, because the digital camera is stuck to the ceiling along with the potato chips, my pencil, and all of the charts.

Dubes 10-11-2008 07:55 AM

These are fantastic photos! I'm quite jealous too in fact.

MOOSEDRVR728 10-11-2008 08:59 AM

Dont forget that mysterious moth that seems to fly out as soon as you start down.

jungle 10-11-2008 09:16 AM

Very nice series of shots. Love the views from the open cargo ramp.:)

rickair7777 10-11-2008 11:45 AM

Hooya. That view out the ramp still sends my heart rate up :D

No kidding. I just got reassigned to the 101st here at Ft Campbell... I have only had two jumps so far... Crazy stuff man.... Just crazy.

Last one I did, we had a bag fly up, knock #1 into fwd idle, and the bag's strap wrapped around a fire handle...

then it started to get exciting when we rolled to the right...

food for thought

AZFlyer 10-13-2008 04:41 PM

So it seems that there is some truth behind these remarks of a serious ride goin down.....whats this about?

MOOSEDRVR728 10-13-2008 05:03 PM

Just like he said... flaps extended, gear down (optional), thrust reversers deployed, and then 20,000 fpm descent.

Figured as much....

I mean, is this done as a combat maneuver only?

CheyDogFlies 10-13-2008 11:44 PM

Flaps or gear not required. 20k down is easy at the right weight--TRs idle and full spoiler in-flight is standard in the manual for an emerg descent. I think the engineers designed it as a combat maneuver as well, but I can't back that up. Quite an amazing machine--should be for the price tag...

TBucket 10-14-2008 12:26 AM

Jesus. I thought that was a typo at first... 20 thousand??? Forget pictures, I want video!

+1

Just tape the camera to the dash before you do the maneuver!! :) just kidding, I know you probably can't do it, but it would be awesome to see!!

You might want to watch this then... I found it some time ago and you reminded me of it - I guess this is what you were wanting to see.;)

Aviation Video: Boeing C-17 Globemaster III - Untitled

ArcticDog 10-14-2008 07:39 PM

Years ago in Kittitas Valley while doing ground reference maneuvers I remember looking out and seeing a C-141 go by...underneath us! It was heading low level out to the Yakima Firing Center. Saw those pictures and even over 10 years later I knew exactly where that was!

I tried it to see what it took today and I had to get around 20 degrees nose low. I watched the video but didn't see any drastic pitch. Did I miss something or was it much flatter - more like falling out of the sky instead of diving out of the sky - with the TRs engaged?

Not exactly sure what you're asking, but if I remember correctly, maybe initially 30 deg down. And that all depends on what speed you start the maneuver at--the slower you are, the more initial nose down you can go to reach 320kt (target speed). After 320kt, VVI and pitch decrease. 2 or 4 TRs are available.
