Note that the YB had a tandem cockpit and this was after LeMay had told Boeing in no uncertain terms he was NOT going to accept a warmed-over B-47. LeMay also said he was NOT going to accept a tandem cockpit.

Convair entered the contest with essentially a B-36 with swept wings and it was a pathetic second to the BUF. Now almost 60yrs later it is easy to see how revolutionary the BUF really was. And the last H came off the assembly line in 1962. At Farnborough recently, an H made a single low pass and was covered with what looked like a new case of 'warts'. The guy who writes for Jane's was there and he said there were new things showing that he had not seen before. The BUF continues to evolve.

It has certainly been a great stopgap. Overengineered by Boeing and the H model kept in its shrink wrap during the Gulf War has allowed us to have them this long. It will continue to serve the bomb truck and B team purpose with loyalty, but it is time we find a suitable replacement. Alas, it is not mother blue's priority to revamp the bomber force. Look at the B-1; flew the royal snot out of it during the recent skirmish with the camel jockeys. Drawing faces in the sky and plunking JDAMs at mountains like Don Quijote. OPRs are due though, we gotta get them air medals somehow right? I digress.

These airframes are only as good as the payloads they deliver anymore, the airframes are obsolete. Which leads to the chronic under-development of avionics replacement or a more genuine look at bona fide airframe replacement. That said and all in all, it is a manned flying gig at least, and it's vintage so the airshow crowd likes the stories and the big ol' wings to pack hundreds in the shade. It's been a useful bird no doubt.

...Well, boys, I reckon this is it. New-q-lure combat, toe-to-toe with the Rooskies. Now look, boys. I ain't much of a hand at makin' speeches.
