Normandy
Im over in Belgium supposed to see this girl; staying in her apartment while shes away dealing with family issues, but thats another story. Captain dad jumpseated over and we rented a car and drove to Normandy like we were talking about doing since I was a kid. Drove through the Somme valley, the area of the bloodiest battles of WW1, such a peaceful area. when you stop and think about all the effort it took to build the fortifications on the german side, and the effort it took to plan organize to have all of this done in a matter of a few hours. im not sure what is the point of war. Dad and I bonded because we both have been in the military for a while. anyways here are the photos
The Memorial to the Rangers at Pointe Du Hoc
The old man taking my picture, im standing on top of one of the bunkers
A shell crater

Next was the "Fox Green" sector of Omaha Beach looking down from atop a bunker
One of the bunkers, walking around, I could see some 18 year old on both sides fighting for their lives. It feels as if theyre still there
Inside of the bunkers, typical from what I observed. Guess the wave patterns help to lessen the shock waves from explosives

Thanks for the pictures, especially of Pointe-du-Hoc. Here's an appropriate link ...

My dad and I are thinking of gettting my brother and buying used BMW motorcycles and go touring the normandy area for a few weeks or so. I pointed out to him that the Ranger memorial looks like a phallic symbol. they had to have big cajones to do that, hence the shape of the memorial.

With utmost respect to those who fought and died, on a recent trip to Ireland I went to the place where they filmed a segment of the movie "Saving Private Ryan". This area was believed to most closely resemble Omaha Beach.
It is called Curracloe Beach, Ballinesker, County Wexford, Ireland. These are screen captures from a movie file.
jsfBoat, having never been to Normandy, how closely does it resemble the real life place?
