Looking at the rust stains on the port side I think this particular Osprey has been out of action for a while.

Here's the story behind this crash and those are not rust stains.

There were still other Ospreys around when this happened so what did the pilots of this bird do? They jumped on another Osprey and rode back to the FOB. Meanwhile we had to protect there plane. I always figured this was one of those things like a captain goes down with his ship.
Nothing like leaving the rest of the team and going back to safety.

I'm sure they were ordered back ASAP. There is an immediate post-crash checklist that goes on with the flight crew. Toxicology, physical inspection, initial debrief, etc.

Don't pin these guys as cowards, don't care, or "going back to safety". They do some of the most dangerous flying in the world.

Or do you do something more dangerous than flying a tilt-rotor aircraft at night in crappy weather/mountainous terrain/dusty brown-out conditions with people shooting at you?
