I saw that show: absolutely amazing.

They said he touched down at something like 258 knots!

When did that happen? Any more info on that incident on the net?

LAfrequentflyer 01-30-2007 10:35 AM

One thing - they can't be US military pilots. The temerity / skill needed can only mean they are IDF/AF fighter pilots. US military fighter pilots would have ejected 1st chance they could.

IIRC, it was an IDF plane.

I would have looked at the damage, concluded the airplane was totalled, and decided it wasn't worth having it roll over on short final just to bring back a collection of future spare parts. All the dude got out of it was bragging rights...

Actually I'm not sure he could even see all the damage.

Here's the History Channel's vid on it. Interviews the pilot and has some footage.

It was IDF. When I was stationed at Elmendorf there was a 15 that got shot by another 15 with an AIM-9. Took off the left horizontal stab, half of the left wing, and FOD'd out the left engine. It flew back to EAFB and landed fine. The fuselage is a lifting body itself. This incident happened before I got there, but the whole story and photos were posted on the wall in Hanger 4 there.

I saw the show on History Channel as well. If I remember, that a few guys from McDonnell Douglas came out to look at to try to figure out how an aircraft could fly with out one of the wings. Don't remember if they discused what they found out. I'm going to ask my Aerodynamics teacher, although the professor isn't exactly the brightest bulb in the set.

Thats that israeli F-15 - heard there was so much fuel coming out he had no idea that he didn't have a wing until he got out and looked
