At least with hindsight's basketball analogy one could say that those with the most talent will rise to the top. Aviation is just dumb luck, because there is no measurable talent different between someone who flies the 777 and someone stuck in an RJ. There is a difference in training level, but the truth is that 99% of those who fly RJ's could easily go through the training to fly the 777.
