Its not a career where you can support a family until you reach a higher level position.
Working at a regional or most 135 freight outfits the pay is pretty low. The typical job progression will mean years of flying at low pay. Look at the regional airline profile section and it will give you an idea of how much they make.

Ive checked out the regional airlines. Couldn't I also try for cargo as well? Is there any difference? I would imagine that cargo would be a great way to get hours and the EXPERIENCE without having to go regional until I have to go regional first and then cargo?

There's cargo, and then there's cargo. You can fly for Ameriflight or other cargo outfits; they don't pay well, but they're a part of the path, if you choose.
Large cargo aircraft aren't available to you at the lower rungs of the career ladder.
In many of the cargo outfits you might consider, you'll be flying single pilot with a busted autopilot, night IFR in the weather. You'll be loading your own cargo, and you'll get your hands dirty. If you're flying for a regional, you won't be doing those things. Pick your poison.
