A positive UPS article
An interesting and a positive (in my view) article...
UPS' export volume from UAE up 15%
By Ashaba K Abdul Basti on Sunday, February 15, 2009
United Parcel Service (UPS) has continued to see growth in its operations in UAE with a 15 per cent increase in exports from the UAE in 2008 compared to the previous year despite the challenging economic times, said a senior company executive.
While the global economic crisis is widely expected to affect express air freight in the region this year, UPS is hoping for a healthy performance.
"UPS is strongly positioned and has the regional expertise and market longevity to manage this situation," said John Tansey, UPS Managing Director for the UAE.
"We expect a challenging year for most businesses; therefore players in the logistics industry will have to step up to face the economic situation," he said.
Tansey said the company was adopting new measures and innovations aimed at stimulating growth given the economic situation.
UPS last year enhanced its service portfolio in the UAE, launching a new global air freight portfolio that offers its customers guaranteed integrated air freight services in a single offering.
It also introduced an economic small package solution with UPS Expedited – the perfect balance between economy and speed.
"Our new services redefine UPS's commitment to its customers in the UAE, offering them greater flexibility and the opportunity to come out ahead in a competitive environment," added Tansey.
UPS total revenue in 2008 slid 5.2 per cent to $12.7 billion (Dh46.6bn), as average daily volume worldwide dropped 2.3 per cent on the back of drying consumer spending and increased economic hardships.
UPS is, however, still a profitable and cash-generating business. The company earned an operating profit of $6bn in 2008 and ended 2008 with $1bn cash. In an effort to hold down costs, UPS is suspending its 401(k) match for more than 35,000 non-union employees in the US. UPS also will extend a year-old hiring freeze.
Tansey said the company's operations in the Middle East will continue to perform well given the increasing need for efficient third party logistics by most firms.
He said success during this crisis will be determined by the level of efficient services players will have to introduce to the market.
"In these times, the need for efficient and effective express service is crucial for businesses needing to stay responsive to their customers' growing demands for reliable global transportation," said Tansey.
He said that in the meantime, the company was taking measures to ensure efficient utilisation of assets and resources and keep overhead costs under control to help it through the current economic conditions.
"Despite this environment, we believe our strategy and business model are sound and that UPS offers a vastly better value proposition to the marketplace than any of our competitors.
We will continue to make strategic investments that provide opportunities to grow our company and strengthen the services and solutions we bring to our customers," he said.

I know that for every positive news report out there you can find ten or more negative posts...
...enough of the doom & gloom already so I thought I'd look for positive information only...
Cramer's 'Stop Trading!': Thumbs Up, UPS
02/04/09 - 03:32 PM EST
UPS , TNH , NSC (Cramer's Pick) , GS TheStreet.com Staff
"People don't realize how much strength there is in the core UPS business," said Jim Cramer on Wednesday's "Stop Trading!" segment on CNBC.
The company reported on Tuesday, and headlines were "horrible," Cramer said, but three things stood out. The company has huge cash flow, it is "completely committed" to its dividend, and the "collapse of DHL matter greatly."

AV,
Thanks for providing this article. I'm glad you did. Unfortunately, there is a small minority that read this article with disinterest because there is no sensationalism in it. No furloughs, no ambulance chasing, no dogs biting off a grandma's arm, no nutin'.
This thread will get maybe a page or two of responses, however; start a thread about NASA furloughing ET and his friend Kermit the frog and then you'll have a thread as long as the mini-series Thorn Birds starring Richard Chamberlein and Pee Wee Herman.

Does the hiring freeze mentioned in the article pertain to pilot positions also?
What is the latest speculation for pilot hiring in 2009?
I have read all the posts about reductions and displacements, etc. but it seems like UPS will have to hire eventually. Just trying to figure out if it will be one year, two years, or possibly longer.
I have been in the pool for just over a year and am trying to keep my hopes up for a class date someday.
Thanks

Not alone
You are not alone - most of us are hoping for you to be in class someday soon. Think positively... many of us are doing what we can to get you here sooner rather than later

Always good to see growth when your taking about airplanes, however, one thing the stats don't mention is - what percentage of total UPS system revenue is UAE? In other words, 15% of what?
Again this is good news, but the article doesn't provide much meaningful information without the backdrop of revenue contribution of the UAE unit.
BTW, what is the chief airfreight export or UAE that's driving the growth? Seems like most UAE exports would be by ship?

Reachpilot,
Sadly for our treaders, don't think anyone expects hiring until some time in the post 2009 timeframe. Realistically, our retirements resume in Dec 2009 at just a trickle. Over the next three years it will pick up steam (maybe around 200) and then go normal with Dec 2012. Too many variables to predict a return to hiring. However, it will be at least 18 -24 months IMO.
Sorry for the dismal outlook.
Have always taken the positive business elements as reported in this thread. Reason I was on the side of no furlough unless armageddon happened, which it hasn't. That definitley bodes well for swimmers. Best of luck.
HSLD,
Since 1999, our International traffic has doubled to almost 2 million pieces a day. However, many markets have been added. I think one could locate some specific reference numbers for the UAE daily average volume, but the trend is overall, for UPS (even in 2008) to see a new record year with international volume.
UAE is a good reference because their free trade zone attracts other to use the UAE has a re-export zone. UPS is getting a good chunk of that market so it is a good marker of the rest of the air freight market.
"Roque Monteiro, cargo manager for British Airways, says the majority of air cargo business consists of textiles, electronics and other sea-airfreight.Cargoes typically are shipped to the United Arab Emirates from the Far East, and are destined for ultimate markets in the United States and Western Europe. Another important source of cargo is finished garments manufactured by expatriate workers in the nearby Jabal 'Ali Free Zone, which employs some 12,000 people".

However, some of our pilots seem to be retiring despite the age 65 ruling. I noticed that APC in their cargo airline section changed UPS pilot count to 2908 from some 2930 or so just a few months back (I think?)... So some pilots are in fact still retiring which is good news in this environment.
Also, I was in Louisville just a few days ago and saw a retirement poster/picture (you know, one that other pilots may sign) for one of our captains who is - are you ready for this? - retiring once he turns 60 in a few weeks!
Guys - I just want to shake his hand and buy him a beer! : )
Screw Al Gore - now here's a man who truly deserves the Nobel Peace Price!!!

In fact, not too long ago many of us (the pilots) were complaining how understaffed we thought we were based on the sheer amount of JA calls, open time, etc. Today it looks like they were right and we were wrong ; ) – and their caution paid off in a big way.
However, once they start hiring they'll be at least a year or so behind the power curve and our HR department will get a call from Atlanta with instructions... "hire pilots right now and bring them here yesterday if you can!"
