Obviously a bit late with the E190 order and all of the 717s. Too bad because the airplane is a big step-up in technology (GTF engines, FBW with sidesticks and automation up front more advanced than what you find in the 787) and it is very versatile.
Who knows - maybe they could do a deal with Delta for the larger CS300 to fit the gap between the 717 and the 737NG/A320...

Pretty sure the 717s are on a 7 year lease with the option to buy, and the 20 used E190s would be easy to dispose of. My opinion as an esteemed graduate of the "golden ammo school of rocket surgery" is that both of these are negotiating ploys to either get a huge order of either the Ejets, or C series to replace the 717, 88 and 319. RA is always negotiating.

a coincidence?

Just my guess, but the C Series is coming along a lot like the 757. It is a great airplane, worth every penny of it's high cost with industry leading fuel specifics, coming out just as there are a ton of cheap older aircraft are coming to market and fuel is cheap. Amazingly - after all these years, guess what is the most efficient airplane on a CASM basis?

You are referring to the -300? I haven't seen the numbers lately, but I recall the seat specific fuel consumption was said to be "in a league of its own" when we acquired the 300. Over the years I assumed something on the order of the 737-900 was matching it. Why carriers didn't lobby for more 757-300 production is beyond my grasp. You couldn't pry the handful that exist away from us and CO/UA. Just think what they'd be like with a new engine, tweaks on the wing, and a 787 style instrumentation suite. Add the latest interior with the thinner seats and we'd be talking 250 seat airborne Prius-basher. Just thinking about the missed opportunity makes me loathe the 737 even more!

I think he's referring to the new density mod for the -200. 199 slimline seats with entertainment. Investor day presentation had it. The retention of the 757s is causing more life lengthening mods. Better than the 50 seat overhauls that were promised.
Lesson learned: lying is status quo for negotiation positioning... E190s are canceled so we will do heavy checks on 50 seat jets and upgrade them. Whatever!
Credibility is only capital if it's spent wisely. The part about integrity in the presentation yesterday made me vomit in my mouth a little.

Might help in the acquisition of RR powered 757s coming into the market as well...
