Default First Leg/Last Leg Drop

As a pilot with WestJet, we use Flica to view or schedule, drop entire pairing, part of the pairing or just drop the first or last leg of the pairing for commuting purposes.

I recently talked with a colleague who informed me that at Air Canada, they are not allowed to drop the first or last leg of their pairing. As well, I talked with a friend at JAZZ and they are allowed to do this. I guessed I assumed that this was the standard.

I am curious as to whether or not aircrew at Southwest Airlines are able to do this? For that matter, I would like to know which airlines are allowing first leg/last leg drops.

Best regards,

Commuterguy

Delta cant do it. Most of the trips I fly have 2 legs. That wouldn't work out well.

You can drop first/last at JetBlue as long as you find someone who will take it. Works great for commuters.

At US Airways, we have a "Last Live Leg Swap" option where you can swap with someone commuting to work to fly the leg for you and you can go home. I haven't gotten to use it, yet and I understand it's getting harder and harder to use due to FAR 117.

Hi Flyby,

Do you too use Flica?

How easy is it to find someone to pick up the first or last leg? I know at WestJet, I always look to make sure someone is not trying to drop the leg that I am commuting on, by looking on Flica. However, I have no way of seeing who is listed STBY on the leg I am trying to drop and it is very discouraging to see a fellow captain sitting in the back when they could have got paid to operate it.

We do use Flica, but the first/last leg swap is done by calling our Crew Sevices department on the phone. We have the ability to look on our non-rev travel website and see who is listed for a particular flight, so a pilot would call or send an email to the person trying to non-rev and ask if they want to work the flight instead.

Thanks Flyby,

We do not have the ability to see who is listed non-rev. Most likely a privacy issue. That would make life a whole lot easier. Are the FA's on the same program?

What is the percentage of commuters at Jetblue?

Cheers

At DL, we have positive space deadhead deviation on the first leg or last leg of the trip. I.e., if you live in orlando, and the first leg of your trip deadheads to jfk, you can positive space straight to jfk. Ditto on the return.

Hi 80Ktsclamp,

We have the same thing at Westjet which is is great. However, are you able to try and drop your last or first leg and therefore break up your pairing. I.e. If you live in Orlando and the last leg or your pairing is Orlando to JFK, can your try and drop the last leg and save yourself the commute back from JFK? Does Delta use Flica as well?

Nope! None of that is allowed. Pairings aren't broken up except for irregular ops by crew tracking. That's a whole other discussion, of course.

Do we use Flica? Nope. We use:
