Default Opportunities for Vets?

I'm about to seperate from active duty as a "back seater", so I fly in planes but I'm not a military pilot. I fly privately and have my CFI/CFII/MEI with almost 600 hours (mostly single) and I have a Top Secret Clearance.

I currently instruct but was wondering if anyone knows of any other flying opportunities for a low-time guy with a TS clearance. Maybe border patrol or government jobs? How do I go about finding those jobs? Trying to get to that magical 1,500 hour mark!

Thanks for any help or advice you can provide!

Most federal jobs will be found on usajobs.gov

You will find gov't flying job by searching for the 2181 series on USAJOBS.gov.

VERY doubtful that you'll find anything without that 1,500 hrs though.
Not sure what the Forest Service or Fish and Game might be looking for - but most of the others that I am aware of require at least an ATP and usually are more competitive.

Some of the fish and game jobs want you to have a Biology degree with 600 hrs and the forest service wants you to either be or become law enforcement, so you'll have to qualify for LE along with the 800 hrs mins I saw advertised on USAJobs.gov. All of the other gov't fly jobs are ATP mins like USMCFLYR said. Good Luck. Happy Hunting!

P.S. See the links below for some sample jobs available now.

Great, thanks for all the info. Do you know if these are good "time building" jobs? Or more for long-term law enforcement type jobs?

The two jobs that bh99 posted links too are not time-building jobs in my opinion. I doubt that many of the other gov't jobs are really good for time building either unless it was for a move to a regional and you just needed total time (since many of the Forest Service - Fish and Wildlife jobs for instance are single engine piston types).

Don't waste your time on USA jobs! Been there since 2008. Due to cutbacks and an insane amount of applicants, Bob Hoover couldn't get a flying job there......if they even had them.

Also, "USA jobs" puts vets and reservists at the back of the line, regardless of what the website and public perception says.

Not in my experience. USAJOBS.gov will be the only avenue into many of the gov't flying jobs. If you want one - you had better be on there.

Like many other sectors of aviation, there are MANY applicants for every job. You will definitely have to have the requirements to jump through the HR hiring hoops (and if Bob Hoover couldn't check the right boxes then LearjetFO is right - he couldn't get the job either).

I don't understand what you mean by this.
Could you clarify?

I will say that this can be one sector of aviation where the traditional networking won't help you initially due the hiring rules and regs and HR having the first cut, but once referred then networking/contacts can help.
