Haven't flown in a couple of years
Just looking for opinions.. I just turned 50, and I have always wanted to instruct. I have started studying for CFI several times, but time and money, and life have always gotten in the way. I am coming into a little money, and I'm considering just saying screw it, and doing the academy at ADS since I live in the area.
I am CSEL-I with about 600TT, but I haven't flown in a couple of years. I'm fully prepared that I will take longer than the mins to do this as I need to knock the rust off.
Any suggestions in preparing, how will it be not having flown in a few years?
Thanks,
Donny

I also had a two year gap of not flying right before starting the CFI. And I only had about 280 hours at the time. I kinda did the same thing- just kinda said, "Screw it! I need to get this done!" So I wrote a big check and went after it.
It won't take that long to get back in the swing of things. I'd say do a flight review, instrument proficiency check, AND a fun flight with family/ friends. (Even if it's just a quick 30 minute flight) I really think that last part is just as important as the FR and IPC before starting the CFI.
Keep us posted. Good luck!

1997-2002: Private and Instrument at a Private University.
2004: Commercial at Sunstate Aviation Kissimmee, FL.
2006: Multi-engine at ATP, Orlando, FL.
2010: CFI at Flight Safety Academy, Vero Beach, FL.
2012: CFII at Aerosim Flight Academy, Sanford, FL.
It took so long because I had to work and save up money along the way. It hasn't always been easy. But I'm currently flying a jet around the United States for a good company with a good schedule, decent pay, benefits, etc.
Overall, I'm in a much better place now than if I didn't keep going. It worked out very well!

Appreciate the info. I plan to do the acandemy at AF, and grab my Multi along the way, probably at ATP, all here in Addison. I went to Riddle, so I may hit them up for a job after I have my tickets.
