Nightmares are dreams too... I asked my garbage man how much he makes, about $60,000 his second year.
The difference is that the garbage man has to work his a** off for that $60k. I don't really do much of anything that could be considered work for my $50k. I sit around until we're ready for pushback, have to work a little during taxi and takeoff, then sit around for a while, then have to do a little more work during landing, then sit some more. I do that four times and then go sit around at the hotel. Sometimes I read a book, sometimes I'm on my phone, sometimes I'm just staring off into space. I do that 13 or 14 days a month and I'm off the rest. Being a pilot is one of the laziest jobs out there. Go be a garbage man for a month if you don't believe me.

Lol, exactly what I was gonna say.

A security guard could give the argument that they don't do much for their paycheck while they sit around. Difference is they get paid to sit around from the beginning to the end of their shift, not the beginning to the end of their parking brake ACARS times.

True, and that's why rigs and soft pay are so important. It's also why, with the exception of regional FOs who are undeniably underpaid, our hourly rates are so inflated compared to other jobs. If the average American worker made $150/hr it would translate to over $300,000 per year.

People really need to quit minimizing the job we do. No wonder the public thinks we are over paid. It seams like we do not do anything most of the days because it is so repetitive and we have been doing it for awhile. Ask a new hire on OE how they feel. Most people that have been in their jobs feel like they are not doing much because it has become easy and repetitive.

Not to mention the toll flying takes on your body. Sleeping in different beds, in different timezones, switching day/night schedules, constant radiation and the stress from being away from your family for long periods of time. If you commute it gets compounded even more. Doing physical work, such as construction, might be a "harder" job but make no doubt about it, being a pilot will take years off your life. None of us are paid enough.

There are definitely some that spend more time texting/talking on their smart phones than performing their duties...
