ah, a buddy of mine from Auburn was jumpseating into EWR on another mainline airline, hint, and both pilots were anxious to catch their commutes. So anxious they had everything stowed away and were shooting the 22L ILS mostly from memory.

Right at the last second they got sent around and as they started the climb they requested vectors and the already swamped tower said no, fly the published.......... eh...... kind of hard to memorize climb to 500', turn right, continue to 3000' on 225 heading, fly inbound on the ARD 069 to KILMA and hold.

and no i don't believe that airplane had an FMS to display the missed.

So I got to learn a lesson at their expense.
