As for Airbus commonality for single-aisle aircraft...didn't eliminating the 757 from production take Boeing to the exact same place?
It is under-powered, but new, more powerful engines will address that problem. And the winglets, as previously stated
will increase the aspect ratio, improving performance across the board.
