Trip averaging is a crappy way of saying "not block or better per day". For example if you are scheduled to fly 5hrs on duty period 1, 3hrs on duty period 2, and 5hrs on duty period 3, but you only fly 4.5+3+4.5, you would think you get paid 14.5 hrs total, 5+(4.5min day)+5=14.5. Not the case. Spirit averages the block hours of the trip first, so you look at 13hrs block or 13.5hrs credit(for min day x 3).

If you are wondering about the red eyes recently, there are only 2 duty periods, so the min credit is only 9hrs. There was 4.5hrs of soft time in there because of a rest period in excess of 22hrs. The company has adjusted rest times with all the new flights to less than 22 hrs of rest, so no soft time in there to pad the time.
