Blame Lorenzo, he paved the way.

Fundamental problem isn't it? For as long as DCI exists we will never have a mutually goal oriented approach between management and pilots. You can't work with someone that wants you replaced any more than management can function with pilots demanding they be fired, or more politely put, have to compete with a potential substitute.
Adam Smith identified the consumers problems with unions, we'll get together and raise prices. Lets admit, thats true. But at best we as pilots have gotten together to raise safety, but not wages. For the collective good of us all we've compromised the rights of the individual airlines, the original airlines, to do what is in their best interest. If anything our national union leadership, ironically made up of people we do not elect and who do not fly the line, should only promote and defend the legacy carriers. To represent anyone and everyone is a maddening mistake fostered from ordinary greed. We're burning this candle from both ends.
