I am not familiar with how the new application website phrases what constitutes a "current FEX written". However, when I had applied in the past I did state that I had a current FEX written, because even though it was older than 24 months, I had been employed by a Part 121 carrier during the intervening time (I was unaware of FedEx's policy on the currency requirement). After the interview, they let me know I would need to re-take the exam to be current by FedEx standards. It ended up being a non-issue for me.
I am not suggesting that you do this on purpose. I would say though, that if the written exam currency requirement guideline is not clear on the application website, you technically had an FAR current written exam (NOT a FedEx-standards current), and they should be fully understanding of your lack of knowledge on this currency debate...
To sum it up, in my opinion, it seems you did nothing wrong. FWIW.
Good luck.
