Last board I sat on had very impressive numbers. Board interviewed 30+ out of hundreds of applicants. All candidates had outstanding scores so the actual test scores weren't the deciding factor. Total time was a plus but bottom line -- Drive and initiative to be in the unit (ie join the Guard/Reserve in any capacity/job) and knowing the unit members (ie drop by on UTAs - training weekends) were huge. This board tended to sway heavily toward the current military member as a measure of commitment toward our own. If you are interested in ever getting on with a Guard/Reserve unit, they really do (atleast in my experience) try to promote from within as a reward for one's hard work and aspirations. Plus this is a great way for the unit to 'test drive' someone to see if the person fits the unit.
