No matter where your pattern starts you need to be there in time to get enough rest to fly it. Usually that means (for me anyway, I commute from northwest Montana) that you'll travel a day early to get there. If you live close to where the pairing starts you can probably travel the same day if the trip leaves late enough in the evening. For me, it's worth traveling on a day off to not have to jumpseat. Did that for 14 years at ATA and if I never jumpseat again I'll be a happy man. Having a ticket paid for from your gateway to where you need to be is a beautiful thing. The computer will always show your trip originating from your base however you call travel and set up your tickets from your gateway to wherever you need to be. In 14 months here so far I've not spent a day of reserve in my base (JFK). If you do have to be in your base a day early the company will still pick up the hotel tab but you will pay tax on it. Same for reserve there. If your trip hits your base during the middle of the pairing and you have had a heavy crew leg previous (4 crewmembers) then you have to receive crew rest in your base equal to the amount of time you have flown previous to that. If you've flown 50 hours before touching your base and one of those legs was heavy crewed then you have 50 hours rest in base. The questions don't change no matter where you live.
