American's have become bad drivers with a lot of bad habits. While other developed nations have made significant headway into cutting deaths per kilometer/mile driven, the USA has not.
While I agree that most US drivers are complete morons, the deaths/mi in this country have gone down pretty much every year for the past 15 years. This is likely due to safer vehicles and roadway design, and possibly reduced drinking and driving. Certainly not improved driving technique.
