Flights SHOULD be less crowded at that time. Another option is ZRH. My daughter and her cousin were able to get C on the flight both ways. They flew out of IAD ~20 Dec and came back ~10 Jan.

I think you'd have better luck on UAL/CAL metal than Space A. I don't know how Space is nowadays but it used to be a nightmare.

Upgradeable standbys go first. Those are elite frequent flyers. With our f$King unlimited domestic upgrade policy it's become nearly impossible to fly in F domestically. I'm happy when I've got an aisle in E+.
