Had a similar situation last year. Capt removed and deadheaded home half way thru a 4 day ANC trip to the lower 48. Deadhead a capt from Mem off draft to fly the trip back to ANC then deadhead back to MEM. I couldn't figure it out. called CS (after capt had already left to go home to ANC) . After talking to a scheduler and manager, no one had any idea why the capt was sent home. Neither capt was a LCA nor was I do any kind of checkride. I suggest you don't assume anyone has a plan.
Flew an "around the world" pairing once that had 4 different Captains (2 MEM, 1 ANC and 1 LAX) before getting back to the planet. 1st Capt (MEM based) MEM - ANC - dh home. 2nd Capt (ANC based) ANC - KIX - PVG - dh home. 3rd Capt (MEM based) dh PVG - ALA - CDG - dh home. 4th Capt (LAX based) dh CDG - MEM - dh home. All of them were on Reserve but only had short availability periods.
CRS does whatever it takes to move the jet.
