FWIW....Speaking with an American NG Capt this morning, he said that AA requires the NG CA's to use the HUD for ALL Takeoffs.
In his words, there was a 'rash' of tail-stikes on their -800's sometime back. The operational fix at AA was to have the CA's use the HUD on all takeoffs to provide 'increased' SA of AOA at rotation into 2nd segment to assist in not slapping the tail on takeoff.
Maybe AA's NG guys can speak more on this......
