I doubt there was any formation training. Formation flying is done a lot up in Alaska. Especially when an airline sends multiple aircraft to a small town, and they return to base empty.
I'm not sure what you calling formation flying, meaning with in what distances, but formation flying without specific formation training and an SOP or detailed brief is just asking for trouble.
